Eating Disorders Q & A

What is an eating disorder?

An eating disorder is a behavioral condition where you develop an unhealthy relationship with food, weight, or appearance. Eating disorders lead to negative emotions, lack of self-worth, and severe physical concerns down the road.

Disorders are more common in women but can occur with any gender or age.

What are the types of eating disorders?

Seek care with AG Psychiatry immediately if you suspect you or a loved one suffers from an eating disorder.

Anorexia nervosa

With the restricting type of anorexia, you avoid gaining weight through self-starvation, dieting, or excessive exercising. With the binge-eating/purging type, you binge and then purge food.

Bulimia nervosa

Individuals with bulimia nervosa may alternate dieting and binge eating, where they eat a large amount of food quickly. Binging is typically accompanied by fasting, vomiting, laxative misuse, or compulsive exercise to prevent weight gain.

Binge eating disorder

With this disorder, you frequently consume large amounts of food in a brief period but don’t exhibit behaviors to get rid of the food.

Avoidant restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID)

With ARFID, you may have a lack of appetite or interest in food or eating, anxiety around consequences of eating like choking or nausea, or an inability to eat around others.

Pica

Pica is an eating disorder where you repeatedly eat items that are not food, like paper, paint chips, hair, soap, pebbles, or clay.

Rumination Disorder

Rumination disorder occurs when you swallow food and voluntarily regurgitate it, re-chew and swallow it, or spit it out.

What are eating disorder treatment options?

AG Psychiatry may recommend a combination of treatments.

Psychotherapy

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) or family therapy virtual sessions can help you understand your triggers, explore healthy ways to cope with stress, and establish healthy eating routines and habits.

Therapy can last anywhere from months to years, depending on your needs.

Your provider may refer you to a nutritionist to educate you on your eating disorder, help with meal planning, and empower you to maintain a healthy weight.

Medication

Antidepressants may be helpful if you have symptoms like depression or anxiety and can improve how you feel about yourself and food.

You may need other medications for physical problems or hospitalization if your behaviors are life-threatening.
