Autism Spectrum Disorder Q & A

What is autism spectrum disorder?

Autism, or autism spectrum disorder (ASD), refers to a spectrum of conditions characterized by challenges with repetitive behaviors, speech and nonverbal communication, and social skills.

Children, adolescents, and adults with autism have distinct strengths, challenges, and ways of learning. Some people with ASD may require significant support throughout their lives, while others may need less and can live independently.

Providers usually identify autism by the time a child is 30 months old — parents may notice children aren’t talking yet, resist cuddling, or avoid social interactions.

ASD is nearly four times more common among boys than girls

What are the symptoms of autism spectrum disorder?

Early signs and symptoms of autism in young children include:

  • No smiling by 6 months old
  • Lack of sounds or facial expressions by 9 months
  • Lack of babbling, waving, or reaching by 12 months
  • No single words by 16 months
  • No two-word phrases by 24 months
  • Lack of response when you call their name
  • Avoiding eye contact
  • Lack of social skills
  • Ritualistic behaviors like rocking or hand flapping

Common signs of autism in older children and adults include:

  • Trouble understanding what others think and feel
  • Social anxiety
  • Trouble making friends or understanding social rules
  • Isolation
  • Seeming blunt or rude without meaning to be
  • Difficulty communicating emotions
  • Taking things overly literally
  • Obsessing over daily routines or planning
  • Avoiding eye contact
  • Getting in others’ personal space
  • Keen interest or talent in certain subjects or activities

It can be harder to tell if a girl or woman is autistic because they often learn to hide their feelings and signs of autism to fit in.
